Two firsts today since I started # back in 2014.

- I did a short ride this evening (from 6:30 to 8PM), at this time of year it means I got back after daylight. Used front and rear DEL lights. Loved it!
- I didn't wear lycra, just plain regular clothes! 😀

It was a test run. I have an early appointment at the hospital tomorrow morning, then I need to go to the office. If I can get up early enough tomorrow, I plan on leaving my car in the driveway!

I've always worn bike apparel when #, but it's a hassle to change back to regular clothes at the office - and it's lost time. I figure it's cool enough now (will be 12° C/54F tomorrow!) that I shouldn't sweat too much. In any case I'll mostly be in the workshop rather than in the office. And with social distancing, coworkers shouldn't notice. 😁

Good decision. I love being dressed as a civilian on the bicycle. I'm not doing the Tour the France anyway. For longer rides I have jeans that are seamless on the butt and padded underwear which I can recommend.
Basil mastodon (AP)
Same, I commute in my work clothes. But it's only a half hour ride to be fair.
Ruben mastodon (AP)
Good move. Nobody has to endure lycra.

@rpcutts heart must be sinking as he realises there's less scope for gardening and bird watching as autumn slowly approaches and the nights draw in. And pubs close at 10pm.

There's only one thing that can save him. He silently, inwardly know he must now resume #

In Turkey, a curfew means you can't be on the streets without official papers signed the President. This is rigorously enforced by armed soldiers.

In UK, a curfew means we ask you nicely to wear a mask and close the pubs at 22:00 (although you still have the 10 minute 'drinking-up time').

Time really flies when you throw your Apple Watch out of the window. It's what we recommend if you want to preserve your freedom. #

Happy 25th birthday to one of our favorite films at the FSF, Hackers! May it always be free of DRM, and go onto inspire more folks to cruise through cyberspace in freedom. Hack the planet!

We're so glad to hear that @doctorow is choosing not to put his new book on Audible, which mandates the use of onerous DRM on all of its audiobooks. We look forward to checking it out in a DRM-free format!
Cory Doctorow will not distribute new audiobook to Audible

Join us today from 13:00 to 14:00 EDT in the Freenode IRC channel # for help on submitting your session for # 2021! We'll be available to help with proposals every Tuesday until October 28th.

Please welcome our new tech team intern, Eostre Emily Danne!

Watching my lad (the youthful, handsome one) present a Brown Bag session about data science stuff.

He works for a startup. They use Google Drive to host the video, Sheets for the high-level numbers and Docs for the words.

He used a Zoom poll to engage the audience.

A refreshing change from what I am used to; a 76 page PPT accompanied by a monotone PreSales drone, Excel sheets showing the 'Run rate' and MS Word for 3 lines of text.

I am reminded of my dad who was a bank manager (Natwest 40 years man and boy).

When computers were introduced, he still preferred to use a dictaphone to dictate letters to his secretary.

My MD got one of the very first tablet PCs. Cost over a grand and ran win98 touch edition.
He still pecked at the optional keyboard.
He was always trying to avoid typing never managed it.

For your enjoyment. The transcript of the Partridge zombie sketch.

To fully appreciate it, you now need to enjoy Coogan's expressions and comic timing.

I have always been intrigued by Sophie. She is always smirking or trying to contain laughter at Partridge.

On occasion, she actually has to excuse herself. Clearly this is scripted, but I can't work out whether she was just naturally laughing at the scene or it was brilliant acting.

I will ask my neighbour Felicity (Lynne) but unfortunately her memories of appearing in such a memorable, fantastic show are hazy.
Andy C mastodon (AP)
Felicity doesn't talk much about Partridge apart from the fact that Steve Coogan and Armando Iannucci were 'absolute and bloody perfectionists'.

For example, she would get the script, learn it and then when they had a read-through or even filmed it, they would constantly pick holes (not necessarily in her acting or delivery) - just constantly looking to make it better and funnier.
Basil mastodon (AP)
it's when the screws appear and then the cape flick that always get me.

Andy C mastodon (AP)
Hmm - I suspect it's the thin end of the wedge and we may well see more given the current climate.
Basil mastodon (AP)
yup, 100%. Plenty more of these about.

Then the ones propped up by sugar daddies that might decide burning money isn't in their interest anymore given covid.

Then those in the middle of a 5 year plan which is essentially a moon shot. (See Leeds if they'd not gone up last season)

There are cases in history of national leaders being coerced into treaties. Yet only Boris Johnson claims to have signed an international agreement by mistake.

In the prime minister’s telling, the UK was bamboozled into a substandard Brexit deal last year. Events were moving “at pace”; the politics were “challenging”; European rules were smuggled into the small print. So parliament must pass a law disagreeing with the agreement. To fix the deal, the deal must be broken.
Basil mastodon (AP)
When did Johnson notice his mistake? He cannot answer the question without identifying himself as a fool or a crook. Either he failed to understand a text that he signed or he knew he was beaten by Brussels and mis-sold the defeat as victory in a general election.

If you wrote all the recent events as a book, it would probably be called the most unbelievable work of fiction ever created.

That segment in Partridge where he fastidiously describes and justifies each part of the improvised zombie outfit to the hotel staff is my favourite TV comedy moment ever.

Andy C mastodon (AP)
Yes - that's a strange departure for Larry.
dick_turpin mastodon (AP)
Perhaps he wants to post vid's with a squirrel filter of his face?
Andy C mastodon (AP)
Or a video of a squirrel wearing a Larry Ellison mask. That would be marvellous.

Only if you're able to demonstrate you're fit for work by a quick drive to Barnard Castle and back.

The misses has bought some very tight black trousers and after parading around in an assortment of thin jumpers she has also bought she put her black tee shirt back on and I thought "Fook me it's Olivia Newton-John from that scene in Grease!"

Not far off 40 years experience of women has taught me to keep my mouth shut.

Crikey - K's got a crowd of 355 for the Horley FA Cup tie with all the restrictions in place.

Just purchased a season ticket - just to support the club. Doubt I'll get to 16 home fixtures.

I do honestly wonder if Deli Ali is having a laugh and a little bet with his mates and is laughing at us all.

In the most recent Spurs documentary, Dele was having his calf massaged:

Dele - 'Yeah - during lockdown, I've been cooking a lot more'

Physio - 'Oh yes'

Dele - 'Now I can cook beans.'

Physio (surprised tone) - 'Beans ?'

Dele ' Yeah - baked beans'

Physio (staggered tone) - 'But beans, you just heat them in a pan'

Dele - 'Or microwave 'em. Two minutes in the microwave. Done'.

I thought the Prem was dropping the 'knee' thing but still it persists and BBC feel obliged to show 8 seconds of it.

FFS - we all know that Black Lives Matter.
Dvd Mrsdn mastodon (AP)
except we don't all know it, and that's the problem. Of course, the 'knee' thing isn't going to solve anything, but the Prem and footballers do have a lot of power and influence in various ways, which has been notable this year in particular.
Andy C mastodon (AP)
Perhaps but I just genuinely feel that if you repeat a significant gesture endlessly, then it somehow becomes less significant.
Dvd Mrsdn mastodon (AP)
I tend to agree, although advertisers and political sloganeers know differently, I think it's fair to say. Probably also fair to say you are not among their target audience...

dangit! I had a beautiful reply and I exceeded the character limit! GRRR! I still use RSS. No ads, I can control the lunacy of the online world and, unlike most social media, I can tune out the stuff I am not really interested in.

Shorter than the original and less angsty but more to the point I guess.
